Method and system for dual mode (single user and multi-user) packet error rate based rate control in a wireless communication system

A method for performing dual mode rate control on an access point in a wireless communication system includes single user mode operation and multi-user mode operation. In single user mode, the base rate for a station is determined based on channel conditions. In multi-user mode, rates for multiple stations are determined using tracking. Tracking includes sounding a plurality of stations. The initial multiuser current rate is then set equal to a function of the number of users and the base rate. Transmission to multiple stations is performed using the current rate. Packet error rate (PER) is detected during transmission to multiple stations. The current rate is adjusted based on PER. After rate adjustment, sounding is triggered or the method reverts to sending a transmission using the current rate.
