A method is provided for determining the three-dimensional coordinates of a point on the surface of an object. The method includes providing a structured light scanner and a coordinate measuring device. The coordinate measuring device tracks the position and orientation of the structured light scanner in operation. The position and orientation data is combined with the image frames taken by the scanner, allowing the image frames to be aligned with each other. The three-dimensional coordinates of the points on the surface of the object can then be determined on the reference system of the coordinate measuring device.
