The present invention provides a family of agents that target prostate specific antigens that can be used as imaging or therapeutic agents. The agent can be used to image prostate cancer and other physiological processes in a subject. The present invention provides fluorescent imaging agents that are activated only by enzymatically active prostate-specific antigens, and these agents include a variety of, including but not limited to, screening for prostate cancer. It can be used in in vitro and in vivo applications.
