Targeted desulfurization process and apparatus integrating gas phase oxidative desulfurization and hydrodesulfurization to produce diesel fuel with ultra-low levels of organic sulfur compounds

Desulfurization of the hydrocarbon feed is accomplished by flushing the feed at the target cut point temperature to obtain two fractions. The first fraction contains a refractory organosulfur compound that boils at or above the target cut point temperature. The second fraction boiling below the target cut point temperature is substantially free of refractory sulfur-containing compounds. In order to reduce the amount of organic sulfur compounds to ultra-low bell, the second fraction is contacted with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in a hydrodesulfurization reaction zone operating under mild conditions.
