Desulfurization of the hydrocarbon feed is accomplished by flushing the feed at the target cut point temperature to obtain two fractions. The first fraction contains a refractory organosulfur compound that boils at or above the target cut point temperature. The second fraction boiling below the target cut point temperature is substantially free of refractory sulfur-containing compounds. In order to reduce the amount of organic sulfur compounds to ultra-low bell, the second fraction is contacted with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in a hydrodesulfurization reaction zone operating under mild conditions. Contacting the first fraction with a gaseous oxidant over an oxidation catalyst having the formula CuxZn1-xAl2O4 in a gas phase catalytic oxidation reaction zone to convert refractory organic sulfur compounds to SOx and low sulfur hydrocarbons Let Byproduct SOx is then removed to produce a stream containing reduced levels of organosulfur compounds.
