An apparatus and method comprising a containment vessel in an underground environment at least partially in contact with an underground liquid or solid material for cooling electronic equipment, such as a computer system. The containment can be installed in an underground configuration that allows human access for maintenance and modifications. The circulating fluid can be returned to the containment vessel and cooled at a predetermined position by geothermal heat or a heat exchange mechanism by heat conduction or by active transfer of fluid from the containment vessel.
