PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel agent for modulating differentiation of mesenchymal cells, medicaments using the same, and a method of screening for pharmaceutical candidates.SOLUTION: The modulator of mesenchymal stem cell differentiation includes one or more selected from the group consisting of miRNA-294, a precursor thereof, and DNA constructs coding them as active ingredients, and promotes differentiation of mesenchymal cells. The medicaments including the differentiation modulator are also provided. The method of screening for substances having modulating and differentiating activity to mesenchyma cells includes: a process of supplying an analyte to mesenchymal stem cells, mesenchymal precursor cells, or a non-human animal expressing the miRNA-294; and a process of comparing the expression/functions of the miRNA-294 in the mesenchymal stem cells, the mesenchymal precursor cells, or the non-human animal to the expression/functions of the miRNA-294 during the period when the analyte is not supplied.
