PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an atmospheric pressure corona discharge ionization system and an ionization method, capable of specifying or controlling reactant ion species important for identification of a sample material.;SOLUTION: A tip part of a needle electrode (1) is disposed in an ionization region (α) under the atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric components or solvent molecules are ionized by a corona discharge at the needle electrode to generate reactant ions (Y-). Sample ions (M+Y-) are generated by the reaction of sample molecules (M) and the reactant ions, and introduced into orifices (7, 11, 21) of a mass spectroscope (MS). The needle electrode includes a tip surface (4) formed on a curved surface. A relative position of the tip surface and the orifice is fixed by setting a relative position or a relative angle of the needle electrode, or an electric potential gradient of an electric field generated in the ionization region is controlled.
