Computer-implemented method for generating a seismic image and terrestrial model related to a subsurface region of the earth. A computer-implemented beam tomography method and system for generating seismic images and improved terrestrial models without dependence on a reflective structure is disclosed. Seismic data records are transformed into data beams that are compared with directly modeled beams using a terrestrial model having a velocity model to calculate ray paths and a seismic image to specify the reflectors. The terrestrial and velocity model tomographic updates are based on misalignments between the data beams and the same beams modeled directly from the velocity model and the seismic image. The updated terrestrial model and seismic image best describe the realistic spread of the beams across the earth.
