Fiber optic laser machining equipment for engraving grooves formed incipient cracks. The laser equipment for stripping machining slots of a mechanical part, in particular a connecting rod for a spark ignition engine, is provided with a fiber optic laser device and arranged to provide laser pulses. . the fiber optic laser device is controlled such that said laser pulse has a peak power of more than 400 w, and at least twice greater than the average maximum power of said laser device and wherein the duration of said laser pulses is below or within the monoseconds range (1ns to 1000 ns). According to a first embodiment, the fiber optic laser device is controlled in a quasi-continuous waveform (qcw). According to a second preferred embodiment, the fiber optic laser device is controlled in a q-switch mode. The selected operating modes increase the efficiency of the machine and produce a groove with an optimal transverse profile, in particular with a small average radius of curvature of the bottom of the groove, which then allows precise subsequent fracture of the mechanical part with less force.
