The present article is directed to a system and method for operating a wind turbine in order to increase power output through the use of a variable tip speed ratio control. In one embodiment, the method includes defining a first operating region associated with an unsaturated torque range and a second operating region associated with a saturated torque range. In addition, the method includes monitoring a wind turbine torque output. The method also includes continuously adjusting a wind turbine tip speed ratio setpoint to operate the wind turbine over a torque restriction limit of the first and second operating regions.
