The invented multifunctional device for modification of cellulose material such as printed- and paper products, books, magazines, manuscripts, maps and works of art on paper, technical drawings and other documents, comprises a combination of at least one drying chamber (1) that is arranged for drying the cellulose materials, further a modification chamber (2) connected with an evaporation chamber (3) that is provided with a device (5.1) for heating an inert gas, a device (6.1) for circulating the inert gas, and a device (9) for the separation of evaporated solvent, optionally a container (10) for collecting the separated liquid solvent and volatile substances, wherein the modification chamber (2) is connected with the evaporation chamber (3) by a protective mantle with inert fluid. Further, there is described a method of modifying cellulose materials by drying thereof with a fluid to a moisture level less than 3 percent, followed by a subsequent impregnation and evaporation of volatile substances.
