This invention relates to dimeric quaternary pyridinium salts of the general formula (I) where R is a linear or branched alkyl or alkenylene or alkyne group containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms; Z is a spacer having a bivalent structure represented by a formula selected from the following list, joined directly in position 3 or 4 of the pyridine ring: X is a halogen atom: chlorine, or bromine, or iodine; having a biocidal effect and, in particular, used as active compounds antiseptic and disinfectants. Methods for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) are also described.
