The present invention relates to an improved lighting system, which is implemented by means of light emitting diodes or LEDs. The lighting system comprises a lighthead (1), which is constituted by a frame (5; 51, 52, 53, 54) fitted with a plurality of elongated rod type mounting supports (2; 21, 22), said mounting supports being provided with a plurality of light elements (3; 3, 3, 3) containing at least one light emitting diode (31), whereby the mounting supports (2) are organized in at least two groups (21, 22), each of said groups including at least two mounting supports (21; 21, 21; 22; 22, 22), whereof the first group (21) is set on a first level (A-A) and the second group is set on a second level (B-B), such that the mounting supports of each group are apart or spaced by a gap (4; 4a, 4b) from each other and that the first group's mounting supports (21) lie at an angle, most preferably at a right angle, relative to the second group's (22) mounting supports, and the lighthead (1), along with its frame (5) and mounting supports (2; 21, 22), is set up in the proximity of a ceiling (K) of an operating theatre or the like facility substantially above an operating table (LP), such that the location thereof is below the illuminated facility's incoming air frame (TF).
