Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to a MAMR head. The MAMR head includes an STO. The STO has a first surface at a media facing surface, and a portion of the first surface had a trapezoidal shape. Having the configuration, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion provide a greater width of the STO at the media facing surface, which protect the main pole from over-etching during the fabrication of the STO. In addition, the acute angles of the trapezoidal shaped portion of the surface are large enough to keep a low STO driving voltage and provide the MAMR head with a long operation lifetime and higher reliability.
