APPARATUS FOR THE ADAPTIVE CONTROL OF FORWARD ERROR CORRECTION CODES FOR TRANSMISSION OVER COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

In a primary interface, a method is provided for the adaptive control of a forward error correction code for transmission over a communication channel that connects the primary interface to a remote interface- The method includes the steps of calculating a byte error rate associated with communication signals received by the primary interface via the communication channel from the remote interface and determining a forward error correction code length of the forward error correction code based on the byte error rate. The forward error correction code length is varied in accordance with said byte error rate. The method also includes the step of transmitting the forward error correction code length to the remote interface over the communication channel. Advantageously, the forward error correction code may be a Reed-Solomon Code or Viterbi code. In addition, the communication channel may be a satellite or wireless communication channel.
