The present invention relates to a process for uniform coating of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on long/short glass fiber(s)/fabric using various transition metal catalyst(s) i.e., iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), iridium (Ir), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), tungsten (W) and mixed gases i.e., carbon containing gas, reducing gas and inert gas. A method for coating of glass fiber(s)/fabrics includes combining of nanomaterials(s) made up of transition metal(s) and/or carbon nanotube (CNT) materials and a fiber material made up of metal oxide(s), forms a coated glass fiber through chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique at elevated temperature. The metal oxide(s) is/are mixture of silicon oxide and any one or more of boron oxide, alumina, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, lithium oxide, ferric oxide and fluorine. The CNT coated glass fiber(s)/fabric is characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), voltage- vs-current characteristics (V-I), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction studies, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), etc. The present invention also discloses various conditions used to coat transition metal catalyst(s) and CNTs on the surface of long/short glass fiber(s)/fabrics. The CNT coated glass fiber/fabric is used to make a novel polymer based hybrid nanocomposite to see its performance in structural applications. The performance of CNT coated glass fiber(s)/fabric is compared with as-received glass fiber(s)/fabric (uncoated fiber).
