The invention relates to a system for predicting weld bond diameter for steels in a friction stir spot welding process, comprising a computer apparatus having input-output means, a display device; a three-dimensional solid model; and a finite element mesh; wherein the system is enabled to: configure a FSSW-welding tool, at least two joinable metal strips, and a backing plate modeled as isothermal rigid bodies with selected dimensions; allow a surface to surface contact between the tool and the strips; acquire data relating to temperature-dependent thermal and mechanical properties of the metal forming the strips including data representing plastic behaviour of the metal; evaluate data respecting co-efficient of friction for strip metal on tool metal at high velocity range based on visco-plastic constitutive relations; conduct a three-dimensional analysis of the FSSW based on acquired and evaluated data to determine the weld-bond diameter for the jointed steel strips.
