A high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer and method for on load tap change (OLTC) switch connection thereof wherein said HVDC converter transformer comprises DC and AC sides; the AC side comprises an AC side main coil voltage regulation coil transfer switch and first resistor; a terminal of the AC side main coil is connected to high voltage the other terminal is connected through a first switch to a polarity switch; two selection terminals of the polarity switch are connected to the positive and negative terminals of the voltage regulation coil respectively; the voltage regulation coil is disposed with a plurality of voltage regulation terminal ports; a terminal of the transfer switch is connected to one of said voltage regulation terminal ports the other terminal is grounded; the AC side of said converter transformer also comprises a second switch and first selector switch; one terminal of the second switch is connected to the low voltage terminal of the AC side main coil the other terminal is grounded; a terminal of the first resistor is connected to the positive or negative terminal of the voltage regulation coil respectively via the first selector switch and the other terminal is grounded. This method greatly reduces the production of acetylene gas and allows the converter transformer to operate more safely and reliably.
