The Red Band Mechanism was basically invented to arrest / stop the movement of Nose Landing Gear Actuator during towing of DO- 228 aircraft. The basic friction locking was provided through Locking Hull and Locking Tongs for the NLG actuator. After a certain time of aircraft operation, the roughness between the locking parts degrades. Because of this, the NLG actuator suddenly get retracted during towing of aircraft on ground and nose of the aircraft collapsed on the Tow Bar. One of the aircraft met an accident when the Nose landing Gear Actuator was inadvertently retracted during towing, which led to discovery of this Red Band mechanism to avoid similar accidents due to any inadvertent movement of the actuator. This mechanism will be used as a Ground Support Equipment (GSE) along with the red band (Placard) indicating the information REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT. It is used as an additional locking mechanism along with the inherent friction locking mechanism.
