The present invention provides a supermacroporous polymeric filter material for selective capture of leukocytes from animal (mammalian) blood. The filter material is made up of polymerizing polyacrylate cryogels on a cotton mesh under freezing conditions. The supermacroporous polymeric filter material combines different functionalities which include appropriate pore size, surface roughness, charge and appropriate hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance for effective depletion of leukocytes from blood. The filter material can hold saline within its hydrogel matrix and can be packaged / stored in swollen condition.
