The invention relates to an improved process for production of high purity magnetite from hematite particles collected as steel plant waste the process comprising the steps of: i) charging hematite particles into a fluidized bed reactor and raising the temperature of the reactor in the range of 400-750 ºC, ii) passing coke oven gas through the reactor for fluidization and allowing reduction reaction at atmospheric pressure for a period ranging between 60 to 240 min and cooling the product using the same gas to obtain magnetite, iii) and Collecting the magnetite by known method.
