The invention relates to a method and an upsetting device for manufacturing offset workpieces, particularly workpieces realized with end flanges such as shaft or rods, by forming a heated ingot with the aid of a forming machine, particularly a hammer forging press, wherein the ingot is formed into a round intermediate product prior to the final forming operation and the finished workpiece is subsequently produced in the upsetting device. The invention aims to develop a method and an upsetting device which allow an improved, more economical and variable manufacture of offset workpieces such as shaft or rods. For this purpose, the diameter of the ingot is in a first step formed into an intermediate product having the smallest required diameter of the finished workpiece, and, depending on the number of flanges to be produced on the finished workpiece, the at least one flange is in at least one addit ional step produced on the rod-shaped intermediate product by means of upsetting until it reaches its final diameter, which is larger than the diameter of the intermediate product.
