The objective of the present invention is to provide: a device that is for preventing the meandering of a steel plate in a vertical looper and that can prevent the meandering of a steel plate by means of simple equipment; and a method for preventing the meandering of a steel plate. The device for preventing the meandering of a steel plate in a vertical looper has: a jack mechanism that is provided to each of at least two corners of a looper carriage and that is coupled via an attachment fitting to a wire rope or a chain that applies traction to the looper carriage; an inclinometer that detects the amount of inclination of the looper carriage; a level meter that detects the height of the looper carriage; and a means that receives the detction signals from the inclinometer and the level meter determines the amount of inclination of the looper carriage at which the amount of meandering of a steel plate becomes zero commands the jack mechanism with the determined amount of inclination of the looper carriage and controls the amount of inclination of the looper carriage resulting from the jack mechanism.
