The invention relates to a handheld, portable document reading device for the blind and visually impaired for reading printed text documents. The reading device comprises: an input device for capturing multiple overlapping images of the document selected by the user; a computing device responding to the user input and comprising of: - image processing module configured to process the image data such that the received multiple pair of images are matched for overlapping regions, stitched together and processed to recognise the text; - text output module configured to output the processed text in a format conceivable to the blind or visually impaired user; and a housing comprising of typically two or more parts, each part containing the image capture unit and a second part also containing the computing device and user input device.
