Discloses use of a protein or peptide for the manufacture of a medicament for treating, preventing, or diagnosing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (PML-IRIS) in a human subject, wherein said protein or peptide comprises at least one CD4+ epitope derived from polyoma virus JC (JCV), wherein the protein or peptide is present in the form of a virus like particle (VLP), and wherein the protein or peptide comprises VP1 . Also discloses related uses of kits and adjuvants.
