The invention relates to an equipment and a method for characterization and continuous in-situ monitoring of a natural aquatic environment. According to the invention, the equipment includes three sources of electromagnetic radiation (1, 2 and 3), an electronic control system (4), some optical fibres (5, 6 and 13) for signal collecting and transmittion, a closed black enclosure (7) accommodating a tank (8), some hoses (9 and 10) for water suction and for pushing the water, respectively, by means of a peristaltic pump (12) into the tank (8), and a hose (11) for discharging the water from the tank (8), an optical filter (14), a spectrometer (15) and a portable computer (16). The method, as claimed by the invention, consists in filling the tank (8), after which automatic actions take place, one by one, for each of the three sources (1, 2 and 3) consisting of some LEDs, the LED switch-on sequence, the spectrum acquisition, the LED switch-off sequence, the calculation of some areas for the preset spectral ranges, followed by the calculation of ratios between the areas, after which an error message is displayed, in case that the resulting values are higher than 1, or the tank (8) is emptied and, after a preset time interval, the entire cycle is resumed.
