The method according to the invention involves receiving an ultrasound image, statistically characterising the speckle pattern of the ultrasound image received by means of a a model of mixtures of probability distributions, selecting an area of interest of the ultrasound image and identifying structures of interest of the selected area, calculating the probability of belonging of each pixel of the image for each component of the mixture of distributions, carrying out a selective filtering with preservation of the information of interest characterised in the region selected by minimising a risk function that takes into account the calculation of conditional means of components of the mixtures of distributions, and selectively enhancing the filtered image.
