A system (100) for tracking a plurality of items of mail (105) during transfer from a source location to a destination, the system comprising: a conveying unit (220) configured to convey the plurality of items of mail; a displacer configured to load the items of mail on the conveyance unit (220); tag (RF tag) coupled to the conveyor unit, in which the RF tag is configured to identify the conveyor unit and characterized in that: said RF tag is configured to store the identification information associated with each of a plurality of items of mail; and a processing station (150) in communication with the RF tag, in which the processing station is configured to identify the location of at least one of the plurality of items of mail at least partially based on the location of the transport unit and wherein said processing station is further configured to: receive an identifier of the transport unit; receiving an identifier for each of the plurality of items of mail; and storing data associating the identifier of the transport unit with the identifier of each of the plurality of items of mail; and wherein the RF (230) label is configured to store at least one of the following elements: the weight of at least one of the plurality of items of mail (105), the total weight of the plurality of items of mail, the volume of at least one of the plurality of items of mail, the total volume of the plurality of items of mail, a class of mail, an expiration date and destination.
