An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system (10) adapted to execute a preprogrammed protocol to guide a user through the stages of an ultrasound examination comprising: a visualization (16) of the stages of an examination protocol; an optional user selection whereby a user can add a new stage to the examination protocol during the ultrasonic examination only if said new stage is related to the context of the ultrasound examination at the point of the protocol in which it is added; in which the new stage includes an appropriate diagnostic tool for the function of the new stage of the protocol; in which a stage of the examination protocol guides a user in the examination of a particular anatomical characteristic, in which the new stage is related to the examination of the particular anatomical characteristic; in which the new stage is configured to guide the user through further detailed analysis of the particular anatomical feature, to allow the user to access more detailed selective stages of the ultrasound examination and then continue with the examination protocol until its conclusion.
