Anchoring element suitable for use in a polyaxial bone anchoring device, including the anchoring element (1, 1 ', 1' ', 1' '', 101) a bone anchoring section (2) with a structure of bone coupling at least in a part of an outer surface thereof; a head (3); a central axis (C) extending through the center of the head (3) and the bone anchor section (2); and a neck (24; 24 '; 24' '; 24' '') between the bone anchor section and the head, the neck being asymmetric with respect to the central axis (C); and in which the bone anchor section (2) has an outline in a circumferential direction adjacent to the neck, and in which the neck forms at least partially a recess with respect to the contour of the bone anchor section on one side and extends beyond said contour of the bone anchor section on an opposite side with respect to the central axis.
