A system for the transdermal iontophoretic administration of a therapeutically effective amount of iron for the treatment of iron deficiency, this system comprising: a patch (10) comprising an electrode (24, 26, 31, 36 and 100) and a complex chelated iron (55) comprising an iron ion electrostatically bound to a chelating agent, and wherein the chelated iron complex (55) comprises a therapeutically effective amount of iron for the treatment of iron deficiency; wherein the electrode (24, 26, 31, 36 and 100) is configured to supply an electrical current to the skin (20, 30, 24, 31 and 21) such that the current carries the chelated iron complex ( 55) through the skin (20, 30, 24, 31 and 21); and wherein the iron ion is electrostatically bound enough to a chelating agent such that the iron ion is not chromogenically reactive with the skin during transport.
