An approach to automatically specifying, or assisting with the specificationof, a parallel computation graph involves determining data processingcharacteristics of the linking elements that couple data processing elementsof the graph. The characteristics of the linking elements are determinedaccording to the characteristics of the upstream and/or downstream dataprocessing elements associated with the linking element, for example, toenable computation by the parallel computation graph that is equivalent tocomputation of an associated serial graph.
