Methods and systems for cable inspection operate bygenerating a relative motion between an electrical cableincluding multiple wires and a magnetic field. Thegenerating a relative motion comprises operating amagnetic field generator comprising a torus that definesa gap in which the magnetic field is concentrated, andwherein generating the relative motion further comprisesmoving at least one of the magnetic field generator andthe electrical cable such that the electrical cable istranslated longitudinally through the gap. An electricalsignal induced in the wires is measured responsively tothe magnetic field. A variation in the electrical signalis sensed due to the relative motion. In response to thevariation, a defect is detected in the electrical cable.
