The described embodiments relate to systems and methods for acousticmonitoring of metallurgical furnace coolingelements. Some metallurgical furnaces have a tapblock that is blocked duringoperation of the furnace. The tapblock may be openedby lancing, drilling, tapping or by other means to release metal from thefurnace. By monitoring acoustic emissions during theopening process, feedback may be provided to improve the opening process andto avoid excessive damage to the tapblock, thecooling elements, a refractory lining of the tapblock or other elements of themetallurgical furnace.
