A system and method for controlling one or more medical devices by a remoteconsole. The remote consolecom-municates wirelessly with a central control unit that connects to one ormore of the medical devices. To conserve battery powerand simplify operation, the remote console is configured to automaticallypower on and initiate a wireless connection in response tobeing brought into proximity of the central control unit. According to anotherembodiment, the remote console automatically powerson and terminates any previously established wireless connections when broughtinto proximity of the central control unit.
