A multi-scale method to effi-cientlydetermine the fine-scale saturation aris-ingfrom multi-phase flow in a subsurface reser-voiris disclosed. The method includes providinga simulation model that includes a fine-scalegrid defining a plurality of fine-scale cells, and acoarse-scale grid defining a plurality of coarse--scale cells that are aggregates of the fine-scalecells. The coarse-scale cells are partitioned intosaturation regions responsive to velocity and/orsaturation changes from the saturation front. Afine-scale saturation is determined for each re-gionand the saturation regions are assembled toobtain a fine-scale saturation distribution. A vi-sualdisplay can be output responsive to thefine-scale saturation distribution.
