Anan-nular space (26) separates the production tubing string (20) and awall (27) of a wellbore intersecting a hydrocarbon-bearingsubter-ranean formation. Using the non-rigid carrier (34), the steamgen-erator (30) is conveyed into the wellbore and operated to inject hotgases into the formation through perforations (16) in the casing.Afterwards, the steam generator (30) is conveyed out of the casedwellbore and the pump (40) is conveyed into the cased wellboreand operated to pump hydrocarbons to the surface. The productiontubing string (20), such as a production tubing, remains in the wellwhile the pump (40) and / or the steam generator (30) arecon-veyed up and down the cased well. A base installed in the casedwell receives either the pump (40) or the steam generator (30).
