This invention provides for labeling reagents, labeled targets andprocesses for preparing labeling reagents. The labeling reagents preferablycomprise a dye comprising a first phenanthridinium moiety linked to a secondphenanthridinium moiety through a phenyl group in each of the first and secondphenanthridinium moieties, which reagents are useful for labeling probes ortargets. These reagents can be usefully applied to protein and nucleic acidprobe based assays and are also applicable to real-time detection processes.Specifically, a sample of interest can be labeled with these reagents,illuminated,and measured for fluorescent emission to detect the quantity of any nucleicacidpresent in the sample of interest.
