A system may include a reactor, in which an anaerobic environment exists, thatincludesa slurry of at least contaminated water and a mixed bacterial culture offacultative bacteria andanaerobic bacteria. The mixed bacterial culture may be suspended within theslurry. Thecontaminated water may include contaminants associated with a non-metal, ametal, or ametalloid. The mixed bacterial culture may react with the contaminated waterto reduce orremove the contaminants from the contaminated water to create a treatedslurry. The reactor mayoutput the treated slurry. The system may also include a filtration device toreceive the treatedslurry; remove, from the treated slurry, the mixed bacterial culture and thecontaminants, reducedor removed from the contaminated water, to create treated water; and outputthe treated water.The system may also include an aeration device to add dissolved oxygen to thetreated water, andoutput the treated water.The system may also include a reaction device where iron oraluminum salts are added to remove phosphorous, selenite, arsenate, or othercontaminantswhich adsorb onto iron or aluminum oxyhydroxide solids. The system may alsoinclude afiltration device to remove the solids from the water, and output the treatedwater.
