Direct visual monitoring system for sensing the interior of a rotary mill, which comprises a monitoring unit, a main control unit and an operation and management unit, wherein the monitoring unit is situated in the interior of a feed hopper and is adjusted according to the physical characteristics of said feed hopper and to the dimensions of the mill in order to allow a direct view of the interior of the mill. The operating method comprises arranging, in the interior of the monitoring unit, a container of sensors for sensing the interior temperature thereof; determining the acceleration in the vertical axis, in the lateral horizontal axis and in the front horizontal axis as a function of time; acquiring two-dimensional images of the geometric conditions of the interior of the mill; acquiring two-dimensional thermal images of the interior of the mill; and detecting distance in one or more planes.
