The invention relates to a method for evaluating foods, a method for evaluating foods or the foods evaluated in this way, optionally in combination with a diet for the prevention and/or treatment of chronic diseases, as well as a composition comprising L-carnitine, a physiologically acceptable derivative and/or a salt thereof, in combination with a diet wherein food is consumed that has a neutral or positive effect on the energy metabolism of a mammal.
