The present invention provides a specified polyvinyl alcohol, which has excellent transparency and viscosity stability when made into an aqueous solution and for which the symmetry coefficient based on JIS K 0124 (2011) satisfies formula (1), as well as an emulsion polymerization dispersant of excellent emulsion polymerization stability comprising same.
