Current synthesis of liposomes involves the use of reagents that produce a fatty acid hydrocarbon tail attached to a head group through an ether bond. The method in this research paper uses a fatty acid hydrocarbon tail attached to a head group through an ester bond resembling that of natural liposomes such as phospholipids found in cell membranes.
