The invention relates to a method for determining the energy requirement of a production machine (12) or of a production system (11) that comprises a plurality of production machines (12, 12'). The invention further relates to a measuring device (18) for determining the energy requirement of production machines. According to the invention, not only does the measuring device (18) evaluate measured values of a measuring apparatus (21), but also control commands for the production machine (12) are evaluated in a computer (19), which control commands are delivered by a controller (13). In addition, production parameters can be transmitted from a database (17), which production parameters likewise are evaluated. In this way, an automated calculation of energy blocks can advantageously be performed, which energy blocks can be stored in a database (25). The energy blocks, which describe the energy draw of the production machine (12) in certain time intervals, are used to be able to reliably estimate the energy consumption of the production machine (12), wherein production planning is also made possible by means of the energy blocks. The automation of the creation of the energy blocks advantageously makes it possible to embed the method in the running production.
