The present invention discloses an audio data processing and a 3D graphical user interface with : Virtual spatial representation of sound sources as objects, manipulation of the objects in the virtual space resutling in a modification of the location and characteristics of the real sound to produce an active soundstage, thanks to a mapping between real sound characteristics and virtual object properties. The virtual active soundstage environment is seamlessly selected by navigating through a grid of multiple virtual soundstage environments. The method may be applied to other variables than sound. The method comprises inputting a data element and displaying the data element in a visual format; the data element can then be manipulated in the visual format using pre-defined gestures to create a modified data element, output aurally as a 3D spatial sound (for example spherical surround or ambisonic (TM) sound).
