The present invention is capable of obtaining the following: a sulfur-carbon composite, in which a mass reduction percentage X at 500˚C according to thermal mass analysis and a sulfur/(sulfur + carbon) mass ratio Y according to SEM-EDS quantitative analysis in a 1000× observation visual field satisfy the correlation ∣ X/Y - 1∣ 0.12, wherein the discharge capacity per mass is increased and the sulfur utilization factor is high as a result of porous carbon having an average pore diameter of 1 to 6 nm and a specific surface area being 2000 to 3000 m2g-1; and a nonaqueous electrolyte cell having an electrode containing this sulfur-carbon composite.
