Disclosed are a method and apparatus for recognizing a PGW fault influence on a PDN connection by an MME, which relate to the field of tracking area update. The method comprises: when an inter-mobility management entity (MME) switching of a mobile terminal from an old MME to a new MME occurs, the new MME receives a TAU request sent by the mobile terminal; the new MME acquires packet data network gateway (PGW) fault influence information about whether a packet data network (PDN) connection is influenced by a PGW fault from the old MME according to the TAU request; and the new MME performs PDN connection processing according to the PGW fault influence information acquired from the old MME. The present invention can provide a method which allows the new MME to rapidly restore a user bearer, in particular to restore a VoLTE bearer by rapidly recognizing the PGW fault influence on the PDN, such that the long-term adverse influence on a voice service can be avoided.
