A method of operating a heating ventilating and air conditioning system of a motor vehicle includes detecting a level of air pollution outside of the vehicle. Depending on the detected level of air pollution, either outside air is drawn into the vehicle's heating ventilating and air conditioning system for blowing into the passenger compartment, or air that is already in the passenger compartment is recirculated.
