Disclosed is a sub-pixel compensation and colouring method for an RGBW display device based on edge pixel detection. An RG sub-pixel and a BW sub-pixel of the RGBW display device respectively correspond to a group of high-resolution RGB data. The method comprises: receiving m groups of high-resolution RGB data; converting the m groups of high-resolution RGB data into m groups of RGBW data, wherein the RG sub-pixel and the BW sub-pixel of the RGBW display device respectively correspond to a group of RGBW data; judging whether a nine-grid pixel block of the RGBW display device comprises an edge pixel based on the high-resolution RGB data; if the nine-grid pixel block comprises the edge pixel, judging whether the nine-grid pixel block comprises a saturated pixel based on the high-resolution RGB data; and if the nine-grid pixel block comprises the saturated pixel, filtering a centre pixel in the nine-grid pixel block by adopting a first filtering method based on the RGBW data. The present invention can make an RGBW display device with low resolution realize displaying by means of high-resolution RGB data, and can effectively eliminate the phenomenon of colour aliasing.
