A rotary valve (101… 106) is specified which comprises a housing (2, 4) with an inlet (3) and an outlet (5, 5a...5d), a cellular rotor (6) which is rotatably mounted in the housing (2, 4) and has a plurality of cells (7) and a drive (8) for the cellular rotor (6). The number of cells (7) of the cellular rotor (6) is not divisible by the number of outlets (5, 5a, 5d) as an integer here. Furthermore, by using an optional open-loop/closed-loop controller (20) a method is incremented in which, in the event of detection of a switch off command and/or elimination of a switch-on command, the drive (8) continues to run until the cellular rotor (6) has reached a position which is or can be predefined with respect to a relative angle (γ, γ1, γ2) between a cell of the cellular rotor (6) and the inlet (3)/outlet (5, 5a...5d). In particular, the rotary valve (101...106) is suitable for a sanding system (15) of a rail vehicle (22).
